MARY ELLEN CARSON COKER, 97, CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY

Mary Ellen Carson Coker, 97, of Campbellsville, KY, daughter of the late William Carson and Volena Bishop Carson was born in Farmington, Georgia on October 16, 1924. She died at Bluegrass Way of Campbellsville on Saturday, February 26, 2022.

She worked as an operator at the telephone company in Macon, Georgia, where she met her late husband, Dr. H.E. “Jim” Coker. Together they were united in marriage, in the church office of Tabernacle Baptist Church on March 3, 1944. The two moved to several different cities together where Mary Ellen continued to work at the telephone company and Jim served in many churches. In 1950, they moved to Columbus, Georgia where she became the devoted mother of Suellen (Charles) Shaw and Mark (Gina) Coker. In 1967 they settled in Campbellsville, Kentucky where Dr. Coker taught and chaired the Christian Studies Department, and Mary Ellen finished her education. She then taught elementary school in the Taylor County System for 26 years. Mary Ellen was an avid reader and an extraordinary seamstress. She gardened and put away the fruits of those gardens for the winter and was an exceptional cook.

She became the loving grandmother of Scott (Beth) Shaw and one step-grandson, Alex England; and adoring great-grandmother of Ben Shaw and Madelyn Shaw. She was a bonus grandmother to Billy (Tandy) Hubbard, the late Johnny Hubbard and Molly (Tyler) Pepper, and a bonus great-grandmother to Taylor Kate Hubbard, Mills Hubbard, Allison Pepper and Brier Pepper. She is also survived by incredibly special sitters who loved and cared for her: Judy Gwinn, Linda Leigh, Angie Cash and Emma Lewis and extraordinarily special friends who also loved and cared for her: Perri “Grover” Warren, Leona Posey, Jennifer Adamson, Sarah Davidson, Melody Chaney and Dixie Chaney; several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Mary Ellen was the youngest of seven children and was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers: Ora Lee Middlebrooks, Hugh Carson, Ledford Carson, Maurice Carson, Derwin Carson, and Dorothy Poole.

The family would also like to thank Margaret Parsons and the staff at Bluegrass Way for their special and loving care of Mrs. Coker during her stay.
