NADEAN WILLIS, 85, CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY


Nadean Willis, 85, of Campbellsville, KY, daughter of the late E.W. Quinn and Bonnie Hazel Davis Quinn, was born March 11, 1937 in Taylor County, Kentucky.  She died at 10:58 A.M., Saturday, June 25, 2022 in Louisville.

 

She professed faith in Christ and was a member of Green River Memorial Baptist Church. Nadean was a very loving person, especially with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Spending time with her family was her greatest passion. Nadean also loved her animals very much.

 

She united in marriage to Dean Willis and he preceded her in death August 21, 2010.

NORMA JEAN COX JOHNSON, 87, CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY

 

Norma Jean Cox Johnson, 87, of Campbellsville, KY, daughter of the late Coakley Cox and Nannie Clara White Cox Wood was born October 21, 1934 in Taylor County, KY.  She died at 6:17 A.M., Tuesday, June 28, 2022 in Campbellsville.


She professed faith and was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian. Norma Jean was a former employee of General Telephone, clerk at Long John Silver, Parks Belk, and was also a part owner of World Wide Fabric. Norma was known as a very loving, hard working, devoted Christian lady who never met a stranger. She was also a good cook and loved her favorite band, The Oak Ridge Boys.

Dorothy Jean Shell Boston, 67, of Greensburg, KY, daughter of the late James Luther Shell and Blanche Marie Shell, was born September 9, 1954 in Pikeville, KY and departed this life on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at her home.

Gilbert “Judge” Burton, 77, of Campbellsville, KY, the son of Coliver Ray Burton and Lucille (Turpin) Dishon, was born April 19, 1945 in Hamilton, OH and departed this life on Monday, June 27, 2022 in Greensburg at the Green Hill Manor Nursing Home. 

 

Judge Burton had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Spurlington United Methodist Church. He was a former salesman at Alex Montgomery Chevrolet in Campbellsville and a Veteran, having served in the United States Air Force.

Carlos Dale “Hooker” Mays, 75, of Green County, KY, son of the late Limuel Ernest Mays and Vanada Judd Mays, was born on April 27, 1947 in the Grab Community of Green County and departed this life on Monday, June 27, 2022 at his home. 


He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Russell Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Mays formerly worked in maintenance for the Green-Taylor Water Company and had worked with Leftwich Drilling. He was also a Vietnam Veteran having served in the United States Army from June 1966 until June of 1972.

James Etsel Money, 87, was born September 10, 1934 in Green County, KY to the late Carrie Milby Money and Jimmy Joe Money. He departed this life on Thursday, June 23, 2022.

LaVerne Rhodes, 86, of Campbellsville, KY, daughter of the late Omer Williams and Willard Logan Williams, was born February 21, 1936 in Taylor County, KY. She died Friday, June 24, 2022 in Campbellsville.

 

LaVerne was a Christian woman and was baptized in Green River when she was 11. As a child, she joined Pikes Ridge Baptist Church and later joined Green River Memorial Baptist Church where she remained a member until the time of her passing. LaVerne worked for 4 years at the ASC office, Union Underwear for 20 years, Kentucky Governor Louie B. Nunn Safety Department and worked her last 8 years before retirement in the office of Taylor County High School.

 

She united in marriage to Walter D. Rhodes on April 4, 1969.

Paula Lewis Baker, 92, of Greensburg, KY,  daughter of the late Tom Paul Lewis and Mary Sue Hill Lewis, was born on May 2, 1930 in Columbia, KY and departed this life on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at the Green Hill Rehab and Care Center. 

She had made a profession of faith in Christ, was a member of South Greensburg Baptist Church. Mrs. Baker was a retired Nursing Assistant from Green Hill Rehab and Care Center as well as Dietary from Jane Todd Crawford Hospital.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, James Sonny Baker on December 9, 2017 having united in marriage on December 19, 1954.

Rachel B. Foley, 85, of Campbellsville, KY (formerly of Casey County, KY), daughter of the late Homer L. and Bessie (Dermody) Burchell was born May 5, 1937 in Marion County and departed this life on Wednesday at Taylor Regional Hospital. 

 

Rachel was a former employee of Fruit of the Loom and worked for the Hiestand House and Taylor County High School thru the Green Thumb Program and was of the Baptist Faith. She enjoyed cooking, reading (especially her recipe books), going from town to town with her family exploring, and always talking about all the good places she found to eat and would recommend them to family and friends.

 

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Foley in 1986; 2 brothers: William and Perry Edward “EB” Burchell; and 3 step-siblings: Cecil Monday, Dwight Monday and JoAnn Riggins.

GEORGE ROBERT WILSON, 85, CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY

 

George Robert Wilson, 85, of Campbellsville, KY, the son of the late Fleece and Catherine (Shipp) Wilson was born October 29, 1936 in Indianapolis, Indiana and departed this life on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 in Lebanon at the Springview Hospital.

         

George was a former employee of Fruit of the Loom in Campbellsville, having retired after 46 years and was of the Baptist Faith. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and UK Basketball. George joined the Taylor County Fire Department in 1967, and in 1970 he became Chief of the department. He held that office until retiring in 2021 and held the office of DES/EM Director also for over 50 years. In 2017, a new facility was built on Greensburg Road and was dedicated in honor of Mr. Wilson. He helped build the old firehouse downtown and solicited money from businesses and the general public and organized volunteers to erect the structure. He was instrumental with many other parts with the fire department, including starting the membership dues fund which help offset operating expenses, securing funding for PPE, fire trucks, equipment, and the new fire house, and worked tirelessly during each Crusade for Children and the annual pancake breakfasts.

         

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sondra Harris; 2 brothers: David Wilson and Charles Lester Wilson; and a great-grandchild.

Brandon Ray Little, 41, of Liberty, KY, son of Leonard Arthur Little Sr. and Sandra Thichava Little of Liberty, KY was born November 13, 1980 in Canton, Illinois and departed this life on Monday, June 20, 2022.


Brandon professed his faith in Christ and was of the Baptist Faith and attended Mt. Salem Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a loving son, brother, boyfriend and friend.

Leonard “Jam Up” McDonald, 85, of Campbellsville, KY, son of the late James Garland  McDonald and Lucille Graham McDonald, was born May 4, 1937 in Adair County, KY.  He died at 10:45 P.M. on Monday, June 20, 2022 in Campbellsville.  

 

He professed faith in Christ and attended Campbellsville Separate Baptist Church. Leonard was a retired knitting room employee of Fruit of the Loom after some forty years of service. He loved NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Dale, Sr. and Kevin Harvick.  He also enjoyed taking care of his car and his yard.

 

Leonard united in marriage to Joyce N. Farmer August 23, 1958 and she preceded him in death September 13, 2007.

Earl Ray Sims, 67, of Campbellsville, KY (formerly of Princeton, KY) was born in Caldwell County on June 21, 1954 to the late Raymond Ray and Marie Gladis (Lantrip) Sims. He departed this life on Friday, June 17, 2022 at the Rex Robley VA Medical Center.
 
He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of Carrying the Torch Ministries. Mr. Sims was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served his country honorably in the United States Air Force. He was a former detective for the Ft. Walton, Florida Police Department, but was best known for his work as an insurance salesman after his return to Princeton.

ANN WETHINGTON MCFARLAND, 86, CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY

 

Ann Wethington McFarland, 86, of Campbellsville, KY, daughter of the late Emanuel Wethington and Lorena May Gabehart Wethington, was born August 9, 1935 in Taylor County, KY. She died at 5:55 P.M., Thursday, June 16, 2022 in Campbellsville.

 

She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Ann was co-owner and operator with her husband, J.W. McFarland, of McFarland Meat Processing and was formerly a Chairman of the Board of Directors at Taylor Regional Hospital. Ann had a positive attitude, was always smiling and laughing and full of life. She loved to travel with her husband and friends and had been to 49 states.

 

She united in marriage to J.W. McFarland February 25, 1957 and he preceded her in death 13 years to the day on June 16, 2009 and almost to the hour.

George Morris, 91, of Campbellsville, KY, son of the late Rollin Orbia Morris and Clara Neat Morris was born August 11, 1930 in Middletown, Ohio. He died at 11:00 P.M. on Friday, June 17, 2022 in Campbellsville.

 

He professed faith in Christ and was a member of Campbellsville Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. George was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served his country honorably in the United States Army. He was a retired employee of Kentucky Utilities after some 30 years of service. He was an avid fisherman.

KAYE HUDGINS, 79, CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY

 

Kaye Hudgins, 79, widow of Billy Joe Hudgins, passed away on Friday, June 17, 2022 after succumbing to the effects of Alzheimer’s. She was born in Campbellsville, KY and graduated from Campbellsville High School. 

 

Kaye married Bill on July 2, 1961 and they shared their life together until his death in 2008. After a few years of marriage, Kaye and Bill settled in Lexington to raise their family. Kaye was trained in bookkeeping and worked for Lexington Steel Supply until Bill’s job took them to Goldsboro, North Carolina in 1986.  After several years, Bill’s job took he and Kaye from North Carolina to Germantown, Tennessee to Hendersonville, Tennessee and finally settling back in Campbellsville in 1995. In Campbellsville, Kaye joined Wholesale Hardwood Interiors as a bookkeeper and worked there until her retirement in 2006.  Kaye enjoyed her retirement by spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing cards and dominoes with her sisters, Jane and Jessie, and her brother, Donnie and sister-in-law, Viola.  She also enjoyed her morning walks with good friend, Carol Mobley. 

 

Other than her husband, Kaye was preceded in death by her mother, Emma Osborne, her twin brother, Ray Osborne and her sister, Jane Moore.

RUTH KILBY VAN CLEAVE, 86, CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY

 

Ruth Kilby Van Cleave, 86, of Campbellsville, KY and Boulder, CO, the daughter of Robert E. Lee and Lou Vada (Wethington) Kilby, was born and raised in the Acton Community of Taylor County. She passed away peacefully in her sleep from natural causes on June 17, 2022 with her husband, daughter, and son-in-law at her home in Campbellsville. 

 

After graduating from Taylor County High School, Ruth met and married George William “Bill” Van Cleave, who soon joined the Army. Ruth traveled with her husband around the country while he was in the military and later when he was an engineer with IBM. Ruth and Bill went on to have two children, Vicki and Michael. Ruth loved to travel and explore new places. She met friends everywhere she went. When IBM moved her husband to Boulder, she fell in love with Colorado and felt she had found her "home". She stayed in Colorado for 42 years, and split time between Boulder and Campbellsville for 22 years. Ruth was a lover of genealogy, fishing, crafting, sewing, landscaping, and staying busy with her hands. She regularly played Bridge, Gin Rummy and Scrabble. She was dedicated to helping children in need by sewing and donating clothes and toys.

 
Besides her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by 3 sisters & 4 brothers: Naomi Jones, Leona Pike, Ella Wagner, Elza, Troy, Roy, and Howard Kilby; 1 son, Michael Van Cleave in 2019; and her great granddaughter, Mia Miller in 2014.

JOHN DOUGLAS WAGSTER, 71, ROYAL OAK, MICHIGAN (FORMERLY OF CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY)

 

John Douglas Wagster, 71, of Royal Oak, Michigan departed this earthly life on Friday, June 10, 2022. He had been battling with Aplastic Anemia for many years and was receiving treatment at the University of Michigan Hospital at the time of his death. He was born on June 9, 1951 in Union City, TN to John L and Helen Parker Wagster.

 

His family moved to Campbellsville, Kentucky soon after John was born where his father owned the Ben Franklin store. While living in Campbellsville, John attended Campbellsville Baptist Church where he professed faith in Christ and was baptized. He was a member of Royal Oak First United Methodist Church, the local chapter of Optimist International and an enthusiast of all things’ sports. John attended Campbellsville High School where he was a football standout and recently inducted into the CHS Athletic Hall of Fame at the inaugural Hall of Fame ceremony held December 2021. John accepted a full scholarship to advance his competitive spirit, love for football and academic pursuits at the University of Tennessee. He was an All-SEC defensive tackle, with 120 tackles in both his Junior and Senior seasons. A 2019 article lists John as #3 of “Tennessee’s top all time players from Kentucky”.

 

John and Phyllis Goff began dating while in high school, and married following John’s graduation from UT. They traveled extensively, both domestic and abroad, for several years before settling into a permanent residence and career in education.Their love for one another and spending time together kept them travelling and experiencing new places throughout their 48 years of marriage.

 

Following a successful football and undergraduate endeavor, John went on to earn his PhD in Finance from Texas A&M University. Johns hard work and dedication were punctuated with a 29-year career in teaching and research at Wayne State University in Detroit. John retired from WSU in 2021 with the distinguished title of “Associate Professor Emeritus of Finance”.

Jennifer Kaye Benningfield, 35, of Campbellsville, KY, daughter of Donna Kaye Wood Benningfield and the late Terry Wayne Benningfield, was born May 10, 1987 in Pulaski County, KY. She died at 10:22 A.M., Monday, June 13, 2022 in Louisville.

 

She professed faith in Christ and was a member of Spurlington United Methodist Church. Jennifer had a beautiful soul and had a heart for the Lord her entire life. She was dearly loved by her parents, brother and grandparents and will be missed beyond measure. Jennifer enjoyed gospel music and going to church. She also loved to sew and do crafts and made special gifts to give to family and loved ones.

He was a former truck driver, factory worker, and roofer, and was of the Methodist faith. "Bubba”, as he was lovingly known by his close friends and family, enjoyed riding four wheelers and motorcycles, being outdoors, and playing video games with his nieces and nephews.

Opal Faye Judd, 76, of Campbellsville, KY, the daughter of the late Omer Lee and Marie Irene (Sullivan) Smothers Pike was born August 5, 1945 in Taylor County, KY and departed this life on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at Taylor Regional Hospital. 

 

Opal had made a profession of faith in Christ and was of the Baptist Faith. She was a former employee of Fruit of the Loom, having worked 32 years and 20 years for Creekside Restaurant.

 

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters: Melvin Pike, Kenneth Pike, Catherine Pike, Mary Ann Clark, and Edna Reed.

Theresa Sapp Goodin, 87, of Campbellsville, KY, daughter of the late Luther Sapp and Flossie Agnes Knopp Sapp was born May 13, 1935 in Marion County, KY. She died at 9:12 P.M., Monday, June 13, 2022 in Somerset.

 

She was an active member of Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church in Finley. Theresa was a retired employee of Fruit of the Loom in Campbellsville. She lived for her kids and grandkids and enjoyed working in her yard and watching the wildlife outside her home.

 

Theresa united in marriage to Gene Goodin December 13, 1958 and he preceded her in death June 13, 2015. In true fashion and the significance of the 13th, she passed on the same day as her husband, 7 years apart.

He had made a profession of faith in Christ, was a member of the Oak Forest Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was a farmer. Mr. Henderson was also a WWII Veteran having served in the United States Army.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Annabelle Milby Henderson on April 21, 2020 having united in marriage on June 5, 1947.

She professed her faith in Christ and was of Nazareth faith. Kathy loved flowers, being happy, and loved to travel. She was a homemaker and loved spending time with her fur baby “KiKi”. Kathy was a faithful servant to the Lord and her smile would brighten up a room.

Wayne Keltner, 80, of Vine Grove, KY passed away Sunday, May 29, 2022 at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center, Louisville, KY. He was a son of the late Arvie & Lucy Keltner.

 

Mr. Keltner was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served 21 years in the United States Air Force. He was a member of Rod Lowe Post 124 American Legion, Greensburg, KY and was an avid golfer.

 

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a grandson, Cameron L. Knott; one brother, Robert Keltner; 2 sisters-in-law: Kathy Keltner and Rosie Keltner; a nephew, Donald Loyd Keltner; his father-in-law & mother-in-law: Johnnie & Elsie Matney; and a brother-in-law, Benny Matney.

LEMAND RUDOLPH "DADO" HOUK, JR., 79, GREENSBURG, KY

 
Lemand Rudolph "Dado" Houk, Jr., 79, of the Mt. Gilead Community, son of the late Lemand Rudolph Houk and Dorthy Pierce Houk, was born on April 23, 1943 in Green County, KY and departed this life on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family. 

He was also preceded in death by a brother, James Robert Houk.

Lemand or “Dado” as he was affectionately known as by his closest friends and family, worked at Parker-Kalon for 42 years and was the past President and lifetime member of Hill and Valley Saddle Club. He enjoyed camping and riding horses with his family, a pastime that allowed him to meet many lifelong friends. He enjoyed traveling and had a great love for animals, especially his late dog, and best friend, “Buster”. Lemand enjoyed watching sports, especially UK basketball and college softball. His community recognition as Santa Clause brought him great happiness. Above all, his loving nature, sense of humor and infectious smile will be missed by those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Martha Jean Phillips Evans, 97, of Greensburg, KY (formerly of Owensboro), made it to her heavenly home on Thursday, June 9, 2022. She was the daughter of Arthur and Alice Lyons Phillips, born February 21, 1925 in Reynolds Station, KY. 

 

Martha was affectionately and adoringly known as “Grandma” by those whose lives she touched. She was a child of Christ, a member of Greensburg Baptist Church, and was dedicated to reading her Bible daily. Most of all she loved her family and friends and instilled good values in her children and grandchildren that have served them well. 

 

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James W. “Bill” Evans, and her brothers & sisters: Hayward Phillips, Felix Phillips, Harold Phillips, Mary Ford, Edith Phillips, and Anna Louise Phillips.

William Lewis Elmore, 87, of Campbellsville, KY, son of the late Guy and Mary Lou (Thomas) Elmore, was born in Taylor County on June 16, 1934. He departed this life on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at the Rex Robley VA Medical Center.

 

He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Elmore was a former salesman for Burkholder Insurance, and worked at Cox Interior as a security guard for almost 20 years following his retirement. A former constable, he was made an honorary deputy by Sheriff Junior Sprowles. Mr. Elmore had served his country honorably in the United States Army, and was a member of Elkhorn Masonic Lodge F&AM #568 and Scottish Rite.

 

He was also preceded in death by Mrs. Audrey Jeanette (Malone) Elmore, and a son, Kenneth Elmore.

Ruby Faye (Bryant) Rose, 81, was born June 8, 1940 and went to her heavenly home on Monday, May 30, 2022. She was the daughter of Hazel and Velouris “Blue” Bryant and spent her life in Campbellsville. 

 

She was greeted in heaven by the love of her life, her husband, James ‘Jimmy’ Rose. She was also preceded in death by 2 brothers: David “Blue” Bryant and Kenneth Bryant. 

 

Ruby never missed a child’s event, the opportunity to go somewhere or a church picnic. She loved her family, church and community.  She was a member of South Campbellsville Baptist Church.

ROSELEAN SULLIVAN JONES, 87, CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY

 

Roselean Sullivan Jones, 87, of Campbellsville, KY, daughter of the late Stanley Sullivan and Myrtle Bookout Sullivan, was born May 18, 1935 in Taylor County, KY. She died at 6:23 A.M. on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 in Campbellsville.  

 

Roselean professed faith in Christ and was a member of the First Church of God. She loved flowers and gardening. Roselean was a retired employee of Fruit of the Loom in Campbellsville.

 

She united in marriage to Lester R. Jones December 18, 1955 and he preceded her in death January 17, 2008.

 

SURVIVORS:

1 brother and 1 sister: Bobby Sullivan and Jewell Dean Jones, both of Campbellsville

2 sisters-in-law: Geneva Jones and Loretta Sullivan of Campbellsville

Roselean was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters:  Murrell Sullivan, Rodney Sullivan, Mac Ronald Sullivan, Pearl Lyvers, Sylvia Merrill and Maxine Sullivan.

LAVERNE BELL, 87, CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY

 

LaVerne Bell, 87, of Campbellsville, KY, daughter of the late Horace Ware and Ella Bault Ware, was born January 10, 1935 in Taylor County, KY. She died at 7:42 P.M. on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 in Campbellsville.

 

She was a God loving woman who professed faith in Christ and was a member of Zion Separate Baptist Church. She was also a farm girl who loved gardening and animals. LaVerne was a great mother and grandmother.

 

LaVerne united in marriage to Delbert Bell August 11, 1956 and he preceded her in death March 16, 1995.

2 grandsons: Robbie Bell & wife Bridget of Campbellsville and Nathanael Bell & wife Kirsten of Greensburg

6 great-grandchildren: Jeffrey Bell, Adaleah Bell, Cheyene Graham & husband Clayton, Georgia Bell, Austin Bell and Mattie Bell

1 great-great-grandson: Carson Graham

LORENA MAE COLLINS BALLARD, 98, CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY

 

Lorena Mae Collins Ballard, 98, daughter of the late Willie and Annie Feese Collins was born May 15, 1924 in Adair County, KY. She died at 2:20 A.M. on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 in Lexington, KY. She united in marriage to Delbert Ballard in October 1947 and he preceded her in death in 2007. 

 

She went to school at Pleasant Grove and finished at Columbia High School. After graduation, she went to Louisville to work at Silver Fleet as secretary to the President. Then she worked at Travelers Insurance. She moved to Campbellsville to work at Taylor Co RECC and retired with 33 years of service in May 1989. She was very active in the Taylor Co. Homemakers for over 50 years. She professed faith in Christ and was an active member at the Campbellsville Christian Church and active in Saints Alive and Circle 7. She moved to Lexington in 2011 and was active at Central Christian Church and Circle 15. She enjoyed sending greeting cards to family and friends.

1 son: Dan and wife Diane of Lexington

2 granddaughters: Rachel Healy and husband Bryan of Denver, Colorado and Rebekah of Lexington

1 sister: Pauline Alverson of Cincinnati, Ohio

Lentha Walker Estes, 97, of Summersville, KY, daughter of the late Homer Otis Walker and Lula Mae Stearman Walker, was born Thursday, July 10, 1924 in Green County and departed this life on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at the Campbellsville Nursing and Rehab.

She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Lentha was also a homemaker.

She united in marriage to Alvin Estes on January 9, 1942 who preceded her in death on December 18, 2016.
