Recent Unemployment Numbers for South Central Kentucky

Unemployment rates rose in 109 counties between May 2023 and May 2024 and fell in six counties and remained the same in five counties, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS), an agency within the Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet. Locally, unemployment rose year-to-year in Adair and all surrounding counties. Comparing month-to-month, only Cumberland County saw a decrease in unemployment rates from April to May, 2024 in the 7-county area.


Cumberland and Washington counties recorded the lowest jobless rates in the commonwealth at 3.4% each. They were followed by Woodford County, 3.5%; Anderson, Marion, Shelby and Spencer counties, 3.6% each; and Carroll, Fayette and Oldham counties, 3.7% each.

Midlife Crisis will be the featured performers Tuesday July 2nd on the Commonwealth Building Products/Marvin Main Stage in downtown Campbellsville. Considered one of the premiere 80s rock bands in the Southeast, Midlife Crisis has been entertaining audiences for more than 20 years. Also performing is local favorite Cheyenne, well known for their variety of old/new country Southern Rock covers. Come early and enjoy the delicious selections available from the various food vendors in the Taylor County Bank Food Court opening at 6 p.m.

 

Thursday night July 4th, festivities shift to the Manchester Tank "Party in Park" at Miller Park with local favorite Str8fwd performing at 6 p.m. followed by Grace Farmer & The Whiskey Shots at 8 p.m. Bring a picnic or choose from the many food vendors in the Taylor County Bank Food Court. The Celebration culminates with the Fireworks Explosion over Miller Park powered by Kroger and CampbellsvilleKy.com.

The Master Works Festival is a month-long intensive summer training program for classical performing artists being held at Campbellsville University. Take advantage of two unique opportunities to see these talented musicians - the Student Recital Saturday June 29th at 2 p.m. in the Gosser Fine Arts Center at Campbellsville University and the “God and Country” Recital Monday July 2nd in the Performing Arts Center at Taylor County High School starting at 7:30 p.m. Both are FREE.

The Taylor County Bank Food Court is a favorite location featuring great food from numerous vendors with a giant tent with tables and chairs to enjoy your meal. The Taylor County Bank Food Court is located on South Court Street and is open Tuesday July 2nd from 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday July 3rd from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Thursday July 4th from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. then on to Miller Park until 10 p.m.

Vendors will be located on Main Street in four different areas based on their products and/or services. The Citizens Bank Arts & Crafts Fair will feature vendors selling only hand crafted items. All commercial products will be sold in the Marketplace. Other special areas will be for local non-profit, school and church groups as well an area for political candidates. Downtown booths are open July 3rd from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and July 4th from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

 

The Elk Horn Baptist Church Family Fun Zone offers numerous children's games, inflatables, family activities and entertainment. And everything is FREE! Bring the whole family and stop by the Elk Horn Baptist Church Family Fun Zone at the end of East Main Street by Jackson Towers in downtown Campbellsville. It opens at 6:00 p.m. on July 3rd and reopens July 4th at 9:00 a.m.

 

Back this year is the Kentucky Farm Bureau Hospitality Tent located on Main Street near the Taylor County Judicial Center. Visitors can enjoy the shade of the giant tent with tables and chairs. Plus, there's a mechanical bull, dunking booth, and entertainment.

Campbellsville Man Killed While on the Job at Metalsa in Elizabethtown

A Taylor County man died on the job while working at the Metalsa Corporation in Elizabethtown Kentucky, 99.9 the Big Dawg News has learned at Franklin Tracy Logsdon age 59 of Campbellsville was pronounced deceased after a tragic accident on Tuesday, the funeral for Logsdon is Saturday at 11am at the Sego Funeral Home in Munfordville.   

Campbellsville Firemen Called to a House Fire Thursday

Campbellsville Fire-Rescue was dispatched to a report of a working house fire Thursday afternoon 3:43pm at 315 Handley Avenue, upon arrival, firefighters found moderate smoke coming out of the Charlie side of the structure. Firefighters extinguished the fire, searched for occupants and provided overhaul. During the primary search 2 dogs were located but they did perish in the fire. The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical. No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported.

Kentucky State Police Investigation Leads to Criminal Child Abuse and Drug Trafficking Arrests

BURKESVILLE, Ky. (June 15, 2024) – On the evening of June 12, 2024, Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 Troopers observed Oscar Farley, age 32 of Burkesville, outside of his residence on Veterans Street in Burkesville. The Troopers knew Mr. Farley and were aware he had a warrant for his arrest.  Mr. Farley attempted to flee into the residence upon seeing the Troopers however, they were able to apprehend him.  While speaking with him, the Troopers observed Mr. Farley’s small child in the residence in less than satisfactory living conditions.  Mr. Farley was arrested for the probation violation warrant and left his child in the care of Dewey McCoy, age 41 of Burkesville.

Troopers left the residence and went to the Cumberland County Dispatch Center to turn over custody of Mr. Farley to a transportation officer.  While there, Troopers saw a car approaching and stopped near them.  Tamara McCoy, age 33 of Burkesville, exited the vehicle and approached the Troopers in an aggressive and disorderly manner while holding her small child.  Troopers were able to safely secure the child, with a family members assistance, and placed Ms. McCoy under arrest.  Both were lodged in the Adair County Detention Center.  Tamara McCoy was charged with the following charges:

  • Menacing
  • Disorderly Conduct – 2nd Degree
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Wanton Endangerment – 2nd Degree
  • Failure to Use Child Restraint Device in Vehicle

In coordination with a Kentucky Child Protection Services (CPS) investigation, Troopers obtained a search warrant for the residence on Veterans Street where they had been earlier.  Upon execution of the search warrant, Troopers located suspected methamphetamine, various items of drug paraphernalia and, obtained further evidence of the poor living conditions for the three children that CPS had learned lived in the residence.  The residence was unoccupied at the time the Troopers were there.

On the evening of June 13, 2024, Troopers obtained arrest warrants for Dewey McCoy, Tamara McCoy, and Oscar Farley charging all three individuals with the following:

  • Endangering the Welfare of a Minor (3 Counts)
  • Wanton Endangerment – 1st Degree (3 Counts)
  • Criminal Abuse – 1st Degree – Child Under 12 (3 Counts)
  • Possession of Controlled Substance 1st Degree (Methamphetamine)
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Later in the evening, Troopers gained information on a possible location for Dewey McCoy.  Troopers arrived at a residence on Spring Branch Road in Burkesville and made contact with the homeowner, Brandon Polston, age 39 of Burkesville.  Also at the residence were Dewey McCoy and Matthew Riley, age 55 of Burkesville.  The homeowner gave the Troopers consent to search the residence.  A search of the residence produced approximately 6.2 ounces of suspected methamphetamine, 18 grams of marijuana, and 128 dosage units of Suboxone.  Also located during the search were cash and drug paraphernalia. 

Dewey McCoy, Brandon Polston, and Matthew Riley were arrested and lodged in the Adair County Detention Center.  All three have been charged with the following:

  • Trafficking Controlled Substance – 1st Degree – Greater than 2 Grams
  • Trafficking Marijuana – Less than 8 Ounces
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

In addition to the above charges, Dewey McCoy was also charged with the following charges as well:

  • Trafficking Controlled Substance – 2nd Degree – Greater than 20 Dosage Units
  • Prescription/Controlled Substance not in Proper Container

The arrest warrant referenced earlier was also served on Dewey McCoy at the residence.  Also, the arrest warrants obtained earlier for Tamara McCoy and Oscar Farlee were served on them at the Adair County Detention Center.  The investigation is ongoing by Senior Trooper Brandon Poole.  He was assisted by Senior Trooper Trevor High, Sergeant Kenny Brown, Burkesville Police Department, and Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. 

Deer vs Motorcycle Accident, Green County Man Injured

A Greensburg man was injured Wednesday morning in a deer vs motorcycle accident on highway 61 near Creel in northern Green County. Sheriff Robby Beard told 99.9 The Big Dawg News that a motorcycle operated by Scott Lockard was traveling highway 61 when a deer ran into the path of Lockards bike, Lockard was ejected onto the roadway and was transported to Baptist Health Hardin in Elizabethtown.

The accident investigated Wednesday morning at 6am was investigated by Green County Sheriff Robby Beard.

Marion County Man Suffered a Medical Condition & Died While Operating a Tractor

On June11, 2024 at 2:14 p.m. Marion County EMS and Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of 200 Radio Station Road near the Lebanon City limits. Found in the area was the body of a deceased adult male lying facedown along the roadside. Further investigation found an unoccupied small Ford tractor in a ditch on the opposite side of the roadway from where the body was discovered. The deceased was identified as Charles Cooper (71) of 235 Radio Station Road in Lebanon. Preliminary investigation indicates that Cooper may have suffered from a medical emergency and was ejected from the tractor when it traveled off the roadway. The Marion County Coroner was called to the scene, pronounced Cooper deceased, and transferred the body to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville.

State Police Investigate the Death of Marion County Deputy Sheriff

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reports that on June 8 at 3:25 a.m. the Lebanon Police Department Dispatch Center received calls reporting that a person had been shot at a residence on Frank Lee Road approximately (4) miles south of Raywick, upon arrival the Marion County Sheriff’s Office found that Marion County Deputy Sheriff William Patrick Skaggs age (24) had sustained a fatal gunshot while in his personal residence.

Officials with the Sheriff’s Office requested investigative assistance from Kentucky State Police Post 15 and turned the scene over to K.S.P. personnel, Skaggs was pronounced dead by the Marion County Coroner office and transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville, the investiagtion contines Marion County officials sheriff’s Clements asks that all requests for information related to this case be directed to K.S.P.

Man Arrested after Fleeing and Assaulting a State Trooper

RAYWICK, Ky. (June 7, 2024) – On June 7, 2024 at approximately 12:10 A.M. EST, a Kentucky State Police (KSP) Trooper attempted to perform a traffic stop on a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox on Clarkstown Road in Nelson County for a traffic violation.  The vehicles did not stop when the Trooper activated his emergency equipment and a pursuit ensued.  The pursuit continued onto Sulphur Lick Road in Marion County where it concluded when the road turned into a dead end.  Upon the vehicle pursuit ending, the operator exited the vehicle and fled on foot into a wooded area.  After a short foot pursuit, the Trooper was able to catch up to the suspect.  The suspect then assaulted the Trooper and fled from the immediate area.  The Trooper has been treated and released from the hospital.

Dustin M. Thompson, age 31 of New Hope was arrested and charged with:

  • Strangulation 1st Degree
  • Assault 1st Degree – Police Officer
  • Disarming a Peace Officer
  • TBUT – Firearm

 

Head On Collison on Highway 70 at Acton Injured a Casey County Man

Taylor County Sheriff Dickie Benningfield investigated a head on collision Thursday at 12:30 pm on Highway 70 at Acton, Big Dawg News has learned that a 1998 Chevy truck driven by Ronnie Garrett age 54 of Bradfordsville crossed the center line and collided head on with Buel McDonald age 85 of Dunnville. Garrett was not injured, McDonald was airlifted to UK Hospital in Lexington.

Kentucky State Police Arrests Taylor County Man in a Criminal Child Abuse Investigation

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (June 4, 2024) – On May 31, 2024, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 received a call of a possible criminal child abuse that had occurred earlier in the week in Taylor County.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Christopher Robb dropped off his 2-year-old daughter at her daycare on May 30, 2024.  Upon arrival, the daycare staff noticed an injury to the left cheek area of the child’s face.  The child was taken to Taylor Regional Hospital and later to the University of Kentucky Pediatrics for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.  On June 4, 2024, Post 15 Troopers arrived at a residence on Ridgecrest Drive in Campbellsville to speak with Mr. Robb about the incident.

As a result of the investigation, Christopher Robb, age 40 of Campbellsville, was arrested and charged with Criminal Abuse 2nd Degree – Child 12 or Under on June 4, 2024.  Mr. Robb was lodged in the Taylor County Detention Center. 

Detective Dexter Colvin was assisted by other Post 15 Troopers and his investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Drowning at Green River Lake at Lone-Valley in Taylor County Sunday Claims Life of Marion County Man

Campbellsville Fire-Rescue was dispatched to a report of a person in distress in the water at Green River Lake (Lone Valley) Sunday evening at 6pm. Upon arrival, firefighters found that a man was missing in the water and his vehicle was in the water also.

Upon arrival, firefighters began interviewing witnesses to get an approximate point last scene. 3 public safety divers entered the water and began an immediate search for the subject, divers located Harold Mattingly age 69 of Lebanon approximately 110' from the ramp and 15' deep water, Mattingly was pronounced deceased by Campbellsville Taylor County Coroners Office.

Public safety divers then began vehicle recovery operations, bringing the vehicle back to the ramp. The incident is being investigated by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement and Taylor County Coroner's Office.

Fatal Collision on Buckner Hill in Greensburg Claim The Life of a Green County Man

GREENSBURG, Ky.  (June 1, 2024) – On May 31, 2024 at approximately 7:23 P.M. CST, Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 Troopers responded to a two-vehicle injury collision on West Buckner Hill Road in Green County.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Larry Waters, age 49 of Greensburg, was traveling west on West Buckner Hill Road in a 1990 Chevrolet Lumina when he approached a 2013 Jeep Wrangler traveling eastbound being operated by Justin Smith, age 30 of Greensburg.  Mr. Waters’ vehicle traveled left of center of the roadway as he approached Mr. Smith’s vehicle.  In an attempt to avoid a collision, Mr. Smith steered onto an earth embankment outside the right shoulder of the roadway however, the vehicles collided in a sideswipe manner.  Mr. Smith’s vehicle then overturned, ejecting the four occupants. 

A passenger in Mr. Smith’s vehicle, Blake Mitchell, age 28 of Greensburg, was transported to the University of Louisville Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by the Jefferson County Coroner.  Mr. Smith was also transported to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment of severe injuries.  Mr. Smith’s other passengers Dustin Ray, age 29 of Greensburg, and Michael Boils, age 29 of Greensburg, refused medical treatment at the scene.  Mr. Waters also refused medical treatment at the scene.

Larry Waters was arrested by Trooper Josh Smith and charged with DUI 1st offense, Vehicular Homicide, Assault 1st degree, and Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree (2 counts).  Mr. Waters was lodged in the Taylor County Detention Center.

KSP Post 15 Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Green County Sheriff's Office, Green County Fire and EMS, and Green County Rescue Squad.  The collision remains under investigation by Senior Trooper Weston Sullivan and other Post 15 Reconstructionists.
