Search for Missing Lexington Fisherman Shifts to Recovery Effort Following Lake Cumberland Collision

Search and recovery teams remained on Lake Cumberland Monday, searching for a Lexington man who vanished after a two-boat collision near the mouth of Lily Creek over the weekend.

The crash occurred around 11:00 a.m. Saturday when a moving vessel struck an idle bass fishing boat carrying two people.

Basically one boat had went over the top of another," said Chief Chris Money of the Russell County Search and Rescue team.

The impact ejected both men from the stationary fishing boat into the water. While one fisherman managed to swim back and board the vessel, the other was unable to return and remains unaccounted for. Authorities have not yet released the missing man's identity.

Two people were aboard the second boat involved in the crash. One passenger, an unidentified woman, was thrown into the lake by the impact and airlifted to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital for treatment. Her condition has not been disclosed.

Search operations began immediately following the incident on Saturday. By Monday, Chief Money confirmed that the operation had transitioned from a active rescue to a recovery effort.

Our belief at the moment is that it was just an accident," Money added.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife is leading the investigation into the cause of the collision. In light of the incident, officials urged autumn boaters and late-season anglers to prioritize basic water safety precautions.

It's very important this time of year, especially you still have a lot of people that's out fishing on the lake and trying to do the extended season," said Lt. Chris King with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. "Just make sure you're wearing your life jacket when you come out on the waterway."

Search crews continue to patrol and scan the waters of Lake Cumberland as the recovery operation proceeds.
