Alberta Atkinson Thornton, 84, of Greensburg, KY passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2026. She was born to the late James Babe and Roberta Penick Atkinson on November 18, 1941 in Campbellsville, KY.
Alberta accepted Christ at an early age at the Shady Grove Christian Church and later joined the Jacob Grove Baptist Church in Summersville, where she served as Church Clerk. She was employed by the Green County Board of Education and Lake Cumberland Head Start. Alberta enjoyed children and was a people person. She was a member of the Greensburg, Green County League of Citizens where she once served as Treasurer and Vice President. She was also a member of B&M Ensemble, a cheerleader at Durham High School for 4 years, and Zion District Women’s Educational Institute.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James “Mann” Thornton on January 11, 2026, being wed on March 19, 1965; her grandson, Gavin Keith Thornton on January 15, 2024; her granddaughter, Chanda Elyse Calhoun on July 28, 2025; three brothers: James Raymond Atkinson, Charles Lee Atkinson, George Gatha Atkinson; two sisters: Rachel Ann Atkinson Curry and Geraldine A. Anderson; and four sisters-in-law: Mary Lou Miller, Dorothy Thornton, Mary Katherine Atkinson and Margie Mitchell.

2 children: Elmira Mills (Kelvin) and Greg Thornton (Amanda Colvin)
5 step-children: Garry Thornton, Damita Thornton Scott, Donnie “Squirrel” Williams, Kaye Calhoun, and Cheryl Lynn Burton (Don)
6 grandchildren: Corey J Hancock, Casey Hancock, Ciera Thornton (who she raised in her home), Blake Henry, Ali Suratt, and Erika Cummings
1 choice granddaughter: Candy Thornton
10 great-grandchildren: Massiah Shively, Makyla Shively (who she raised in her home), Demetrius Hancock, McKinleigh Hancock, Macklyn Hancock, Maverick Strange, Kylin Suratt, Mason Suratt, Zaidyn Henry, Baylor Cummings, and Baylen Cummings

Visitation: Monday, September 7, 2026 from 5:00pm-8:00pmCT and Tuesday after 7:00amCT at the funeral home
