Shirley Mae Cartwright Young, 90, of Campbellsville, KY was born May 4, 1935 in Louisville, KY to William Paul and Martha Beatrice Briner Cartwright.
After her mother’s death in 1935, she was raised by her grandparents, Arthur Frank and Roberta Cartwright. Shirley departed this life at 10:15 P.M. on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 in Louisville, KY at the University of Louisville Hospital after a short illness.
Shirley had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a longtime member of Good Hope Baptist Church.
She united in marriage to Allen D. Young on June 20, 1959 after meeting at Campbellsville Junior College their freshman year. Together, they shared 66 wonderful years of marriage.
Shirley was a graduate of Campbellsville Junior College and the University of Kentucky. She began her teaching career in Louisville, Kentucky, and retired from the Taylor County School System in 1989 after 29 years. She primarily taught 1st and 2nd grade.
She found great joy in reading, traveling (they visited all 50 states), and most of all, spending times with those she loved. Shirley will be remembered for the special bond she shared with her family and friends, her unwavering positivity, her strong faith, and her unmistakable sense of humor that brought light to every room.

6 grandchildren: Brittany Hawes & husband Jonathan of Greensburg, Leigh Anne Sluder & husband Eric of Campbellsville, Allie Young-Martin and husband Ryan Martin of Anacortes, Washington, Tate Floyd and wife Savannah and Katie Floyd and Carson Floyd of Campbellsville
1 great-grandson: Tatum Jaymes Sluder
2 sisters: Betty Jane “Frankie” Quigley of Mitchell, Indiana and Pat Derrick of Springfield, Illinois
Several nieces & nephews
Many other friends & relatives
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Gloria “Jean” Fancher and a baby brother lovingly known as Sonny.
