Paul Douglas Gaines, 81, Horse Cave, KY (Taylor County Native)


Paul Douglas Gaines, 81, passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. He was born and raised in Taylor County, KY on July 12, 1942, a son of the late Richard and Nancy Gaines.

 

He was raised on a dairy farm in the Meadowcreek area. Paul met his wife, Wanda, at Taylor County High School. They graduated in 1960 and married on February 13, 1961. They had 3 children, Janie, Doug, and Gary. Paul attended Berea College where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture in 1968. Paul and Wanda moved to Horse Cave in 1969 where Paul worked for Kentucky Utilities for several years. Paul then pursued a career in agricultural sales. He worked for a number of companies including Van Dale, Badger, and Allis Chalmers. He joined Farm Credit Leasing in Louisville where he worked until 2003. Paul then worked for several years for the Caverna School System as a substitute teacher and bus driver. Paul was a member of Horse Cave United Methodist Church. He was active in the Jaycees and played tennis for many years. Paul enjoyed genealogy, fishing, gardening, loafing downtown Horse Cave, and storytelling. 

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by 3 brothers: Billy, Bobby, and Danny as well as his beloved wife, Wanda.

 

SURVIVORS:
3 children: Janie (Mark) Branstetter of Lynn Haven, FL, Doug (Laura) Gaines of Park City, KY and Gary (Angie) Gaines of Myrtle Beach, SC

6 grandchildren: Steven (Nicole) Branstetter, Stuart (Tara) Branstetter, Emily (Luke) Mathews, Ryan Gaines, Lauren, Gaines, and Nicholas Gaines

5 great-grandchildren: Rylan, Oaklyn, Ellie, Fritz, and Aubrey

1 sister: Janie Fisher of Campbellsville

 

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 16, at 3:00pmET at the Horse Cave Methodist Church. A catered meal will follow in the fellowship hall. All family and friends are welcome.
