OBITS

Allen Lee Burress, Sr., 88, Campbellsville, KY

Allen Lee Burress, Sr., 88, of Campbellsville, KY passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Tuesday, October 31, 2023. He was born to William Horace and Della Cave Burress of the Shiloh Community in Taylor County, KY on August 28, 1935.

Allen graduated from Taylor County High School, attended the University of Kentucky, obtained his degree in accounting from Western Kentucky University and was a Certified Public Accountant.

Allen grew up helping his father on the family farm. He developed his love of basketball in high school and acquired the nickname Spivey. Allen was drafted into the Army and served for 2 years in Germany. While in Europe, he played basketball for his division and enjoyed trips to Paris and London. Upon his return to the states he settled in Nashville, Tennessee and married Elizabeth Anne Hall in 1960. Anne and he lived in Nashville for over 10 years while having their three children, Allen Jr., John and Elizabeth. Allen worked for Peat, Marwick & Mitchell (now known as KPMG) while in Nashville. In the early 70s, they moved back to Campbellsville to be with their families. Allen established his own CPA firm and practiced for over 28 years. He taught his children his love of the outdoors through numerous camping and canoeing trips. Anne and he kept their boat in a slip at Emerald Isle Marina until Anne’s stroke in 2004. Allen loved fishing on Green River Lake. He held the record at one time for the largest muskie caught in Green River Lake. This fish adorned his office walls and the Taylor County Airport for many years. When not working or fishing, he loved watching the University of Kentucky basketball team play ball. Many a Saturday afternoon or evening was spent watching and yelling at the game with friends. Allen enjoyed traveling and playing bridge with Anne. He was extremely proud of his five grandchildren and enjoyed visiting with them whenever he could. Allen was a member of Bethel First Presbyterian Church, Campbellsville Country Club, the American Legion, and Lions Club. Later in life, he enjoyed spending the winters in Orange Beach, Alabama and eating oysters on the half shell.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Anne Hall; one son, Allen Lee Burress, Jr.; two brothers: William “Billy” Burress and Dwight Cave; a sister, Madeline Morrison; a brother-in-law, Circuit Court Judge Mike Hall; and a sister-in-law, Abby Hall Carter.
