Mary Margaret "Peggy" Stine, 74, passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2021, after a brave battle with cancer. Peggy was born to Howard Dennis Votaw and Phoebe Ann Brooks of Willisburg, KY on June 28, 1947 and was adopted by George Carl Stine, Sr. and Mae Maude (Thompson) Stine of Lebanon, KY.

Peggy attended St. Charles School and graduated from St. Augustine High School. She gave birth to a son, James Philip Stine, who was adopted as Stephan James Drexler via Catholic Charities. Peggy married James Bartholomew "Bud" Mattingly, Jr. and had two sons, James Carl and John Frederick Mattingly. She later married the second love of her life, Harold Eugene Gaylor, to whom she is widowed.

While being a mother and homemaker, Peggy pursued her life-long dream of becoming a nurse. First, as a licensed practical nurse (LPN), graduating from Danville School of Practical Nursing, and then as a registered nurse (RN) from Midway College. Her nursing career began in her teen years taking her through adulthood working in hospitals, nursing homes and in-home health care. Other than being a nurse, Peggy was most proud of her family as genealogy was her forte. Never meeting a stranger, she knew many family lines, often able to recall, without notes, a person's family tree. This skill paved the way for Peggy to connect with her biological parents, siblings and first-born child. When not working as a nurse or researching genealogy, she was an avid crochet and needle crafter. She enjoyed gifting handmade potholders, tissue covers, blankets and afghans to loved ones. Other times, Peggy, affectionately known as the "Asphalt Kid," could be found clocking miles in her car. She never missed a chance to hit the road, always behind the wheel, to go visit, out to eat or just drive around and see what the neighbors had new. It was no secret how much Peggy loved the telephone. She was always just a phone call away and could talk for hours on end. Her phone bills over her lifetime surely paid many an AT&T paycheck. Although she never cared for birds out of a fear they would fly into her hair, she always loved her dogs and cats. From Cleo and Tess Trueheart to Black Beauty, Pinky and others, they were her four-legged fur-babies she snuggled, hugged and kissed.

Peggy was preceded in death by her biological and adoptive parents, spouses and 6 siblings: Robert Edward "Bob" (Margaret Jane Austin) Stine, James Gerald "Jerry" Stine, Joseph Anthony "Tony"Stine, John Frederick "Johnny" Stine, Allen Powell (Helen Isabel Wheatley) Stine, George Carl (Drucilla Mann) Stine, Jr., Alma Fern "Sr. Mary Dominic, O.P." Stine and Dorothy Marie "Wee Wee" Stine (Edwin C.) Wollen.

3 sons: Stephan Drexler of Louisville, KY, Carl (Holly Dyer) Mattingly of Seymour, IN and Fred (Greg Bredenkamp) Mattingly of Indianapolis, IN

4 siblings: Deana (C. Lee ) Kemp, Billie Woods, Ray (Cindy) King and Roy (Cheryl) King all of Jacksonville, FL

4 grandchildren: Jessica (Ben) Riley, Patrick (Courtney) Mattingly and Emily Mattingly all of Springfield, KY and Jeremy Dyer of Louisville, KY

2 great-grandchildren: Bentley and Oaklee Riley

3 sisters-in-law: Patricia Ann "Patsy" (Weatherford) Stine of Louisville, KY, Mary Lou (Osbourne) Stine of Lebanon, KY and Gertrude "Gert" (Braun) Stine of Bakersfield, CA
