Congratulations to CHS Head Basketball Coach, Anthony Epps, for being inducted this past Saturday into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame. Coach Epps, 1993 graduate from Marion County High School, was a four-year starter for the Knights. During his final two seasons he led Marion County to a 66-5 record, the 1993 LIT Championship and captured back-to-back district and region titles.
In 1993, he helped lead Marion Co to the school's first state championship and made history as a member of the first 5th region team to win a KHSAA state basketball title. Epps was named to the All-State and All-Tournament Teams. For his performance he was named the 1993 Boys State Tournament Most Valuable Player. He finished his high school career with 2044 points, 637 rebounds, 358 free throws and 728 assists. He also hold the school's career record for three-point field goals made with 260.
Epps went on to play for the University of Kentucky under Coach Rick Pitino and helped lead the Wildcats to two straight Final Four appearances with a runner-up finish in 1997 and the NCAA championship in 1996.
The induction for the Hall of Fame was extra special for Coach Epps as his daughter, Makayla, was also inducted into the Hall of Fame Saturday night. Makayla helped lead the Lady Knights to four straight state tournaments. Her pinnacle came in her senior season, when the team went undefeated and won the 2013 state championship, with Epps earning tournament MVP honors. Makayla was highly recruited, receiving offers from multiple top programs, and committed to the University of Kentucky, becoming a key signee for the Wildcats. She was drafted in the 2017 WNBA draft, where she last played for the Chicago Sky. Makayla is currently the head girls basketball for her alma mater, Marion County.
